The Last Hurrah for Crinkly - Euro tour (9/7-?) Day 15 Checking out Limerick (9/21)

Get up and head to the bus station to take a bus down to Limerick to meet up with another Bewelcome host. Get in and we find each other at the bus station and we go to his place to drop off the bags so he can get back to work and I go walking to explore until he is off. First stop is the King John castle which has tons of videos and interactive exhibits (but the interactive stuff was shut down due to covid) with loads of information of the history of the castle which is really cool. Get to see parts of the old stone town that was in the castle underneath and also learned that they laid siege to the castle by mining below the castle to try and infiltrate the walls but also to collapse them so both sides were mining to do this/prevent this. Never heard of that but makes sense and thought it was interesting.

Limerick street art

Crinkly checking out some old cannons

Shall we?

How do I regain said Earlhood?

Crinkly found his ancestors :)

Inner castle views

Crinkly misbehaved so into the stocks he went

Had to wear masks inside

Crinkly found more street art

Trying to meet some friends but they are closed :(

Found an impressive church as I was walking around

Beautiful inside

Stained glass over the alter

Naturally this church has an O'Brien chapel

Beautiful windows...

Love organs

mmmmm skeptical hahah

Another church on todays walk

With a massive organ... noice

Crinkly walking through the park found a giant statue

Walked through some sprinkling rain to check this church out across town.. it was closed... thatll show me hahah

Stopped in Portleys for a beer and to dry off as I walk back to the place

Oldest bar in Limerick... almost older than the USA

This view is probably why its still around

Went out with my host for a few drinks

Even checked out a non traditional irish pub

Next go check out St. Mary's cathedral which was beautiful. Also seeing many O'Briens as I see the history of the town and names on placards everywhere. Grab a juice and a crepe as I walk around then head back down towards the bus station and check out the churches nearby there (north side of the Peoples Park); was a nice church that had the confession booths labelled for who was inside so you could pick the pastor you speak to which I have seen a couple times since then but thought it was a good idea. The church on the south side was closed unfortunately. The art museum that is attached to the Peoples park was actually between exhibits. Peoples park was small and underwhelming probably because time of year. While there, it starts sprinkling. Walk over to St. Johns Cathedral but it was closed and I am getting a little wet (no hood/umbrella as I dont have my rain gear) so I decide to start heading back towards the place. Stop in to Portleys pub for a beamish stout which wasnt bad but it was different than Guinness for sure. Then keep walking since I dried off a lil bit to grab a beer at JJ bowles which has a great view of the castle and is the oldest pub in Limerick apparently. They have a local craft beer (treaty brewing) on tap so I get their IPA which is pretty tasty. Meet back up with the host at the bar then we go to the house for dinner before going downtown for a mini pub crawl which was nice. Once we have checked out a couple places we head back to the place to chill before heading to bed.
